Russia is the largest country in the world, with 143 million inhabitants and most of them have Russian as a first language. Russian is understood by the 99 percent of people in Russia and also by many people who inhabit in countries that surround Russia. Russia has gained a worldwide popularity during the last four centuries, and even though it may be difficult to learn for some because of the alphabetic differences, its cultural importance is undeniable. That’s why there is a big number of people are eager to learn Russian.

Some other facts about Russian language are the following:

  • Russian is the most spoken Slavic language.

  • Russian is the 4th most spoken language in the world, counting both native and non-native speakers.

  • Counting only native speakers Russian is the 7th most spoken language.

  • Russian language is official in Russia, Belarus, South Ossetia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Abkhazia.

  • There is more than one Russian dialect; linguists usually divide them into Northern dialects and Southern dialects

  • Russian alphabet is a modernization of the Cyrillic alphabet or Cyrillic script; an alphabet from the 10th century,

  • There isn’t a certain number of Russian words; this is due to the common habit of joining words to create new ones. There is an approximation of 500.000 words, but this number may be altered at any time.

  • The Slavic, an old form of Russian language, was created to translate the Bible to people who spoke many dialects that were closely related.

  • Russian allows people to change the order of words in a determined sentence without varying its meaning.

  • Russian motion verbs refer to verbs that implicate movement such as walking and swimming for instance.

  • Russian is also used in Ukraine, but it isn’t Ukraine’s official language.

  • There are other languages that are derivate from Russian; these languages are usually used in rural areas.

Generally, foreigners who want to live and work in Russia must first find a job, after which the employer will organise a Russian work permit.
